9/11

The nation has felt the widespread effects of 9/11. Not only has it affected us emotionally but it has also affected our culture. However not in the way many thought. Many aspects of daily life go on unchanged, while others have been greatly affected. airport security, obviously, has been changed forever, as many things have changed since the time of our parents. Movies and television have been showing many more disastor, and horror programs. In a way Americans have become descensitized to these types of things. However other things have been changed dramatically. terrorism is no longer a topic for light discussion, most news programs have returned to reporting on the same types of stories as they did pre 9/11. as for Sontags concerns, while she made some valid arguments her timing could not have been worse.

  1. As I read "Observations" by Susan Sontag, it occured to me that her words, although shocking and disturbing, were misleading to those who read her piece. Every person involved in the Government has said at one point or another that everything in the U.S is "O.K". When in actuality nothing was o.k at that point. Many people were discouraged and frightened to even step out of thier houses. Even though I personally was not affected by the attack, one can only imagine what those people had to live through even till this day.
Before 9/11 happened many people stood behind previous President Bush, even during and after the attacks most were still convinced that Bush was the man to cure everything. To make that tradgic day a day where revenge was now in sight. I do have to agree with what Sontag was saying, but her choice of words, for example, "cowardly", was not the best way to make her point. I can remember when Bush was elected President, I didnt like him then, and I dont like him now. Overall, Sontag makes really good points, but she just said it at the worng time.

  2. dmoney715, I agree with you upon the fact that Susan Sontang's analysis of the 9/11 situation could not have come at a worse time, but I do feel that the United States has indeed changed forever. Compared to pre-9/11, policymakers now have to consider the fact of homeland security and the nation's saftey when making military decisions. Once the World Trade Center was struck, American optimism came to a halt. US defense spending has nearly doubled since the attacks. There has also been a dramatic increase in hate crimes against muslims. So I say to you dmoney715, the US has changed since 9/11. Its not the same as before. It will never be the same.
